Boxed Ice: Notes from a Production Deployment

Back in July, Boxed Ice posted an article on why they migrated from MySQL to MongoDB that made the rounds. Now, 8 months later, they have posted again, this time an in-depth article on their experiences.

They posted some pretty interesting stats:

  • Collections (tables): 17,810
  • Indexes: 43,175
  • Documents (rows): 664,158,090

I cannot imagine having almost 700 million documents to deal with. The highlights of the article in my opinion are the explanations of how they are handling replication and dealing with durability. Some interesting thoughts on how to get around adding indexes to lots of data (1.3 will have background indexes) and dealing with disk space also caught my interest.
